South Sawyer Glacier, Alaska

South Sawyer Glacier

Tracy Arm, Inside Passage, Alaska

I can’t get enough of the beauty of Alaska.  Every moment I’m out photographing in this big breathtaking place I see so much grandeur.  The landscapes are awe-inspiring and the animals unique and oh so gorgeous.

South Sawyer Glacier is one of the amazing places I have had the privilege to see and photograph.  A sunny blue sky day was what I needed to capture all the hidden drama of this remote glacier.

When photographing landscapes from a moving boat you must counteract the boats rocking and rolling.  Most photography from a boat is usually handheld with a fast shutter speed required to secure a sharp image.

Using a zoom lens is a great advantage when photographing afloat.  This allows you to quickly change your composition including or excluding portions of the landscape to bring attention to certain details.

Post processing is very important when working with images shot in bright light where both dark shadows and bright highlights are present.  Photographing ice and snow softens the contrast a bit but I still lightened some of the deeper shadowed areas and darkened some of the highlight areas.  Reducing the contrast helped “pop” this image.

In late June, I’ll be returning to Southeast Alaska.  A couple of spots are still available for this private photo expedition.  For more information please check out my expedition page.

Embrace the journey!
