Totem

Ketchikan, Alaska

Before my Southeast Alaska’s photo expedition last year a few of my guests and I extended our trip and spent a couple of days in Ketchikan to photograph some of the cultural sights.  The totem parks held so much magic that it kept our cameras busy as we shot many images of the carvings.  The intricate detail of these historical works of art was fascinating.  Some totems were found in a forested setting and others in more of a park-like location.  Both sites were excellent backdrops for the totems.

The detail of this totem’s eye captivated me and created this shot.  Using the rule of thirds I placed the eye on the upper left powerpoint making this a strong composition.

On this year’s Southeast trip as an extension, we will be visiting the historic Sitka totem park.  This National Park Service site is renowned for its totems set in an old growth forest.  I’m excited to be visiting it and photographing its beauty.

Embrace the journey!
